To the editor:
I invite middle school students and faculty to join in a mission to drop off donations in the box at Roche Brothers in order to help tackle food insecurity. Food insecurity is having limited or unreliable access to sufficient food due to a lack of money or other resources. In Wellesley, approximately 32% or ~9,600 people deal with food insecurity. In addition, the typical family of four in Wellesley wastes around 7 lb. of food per week. This level of waste equates to around 5 meals per week. Instead of wasting all this food, donating it would be a much better way to help the community. A sufficient and consistent food source is necessary for families, but for many people, it’s not possible without the community’s help.
Although students are guaranteed two free meals during the school year, many families struggle to provide enough food on weekends and during the summer. My hope is that this donation box at Roche Brothers will be able to provide a sense of security for those families year round.
Since as a community we have the opportunity to help out those who are struggling, we should take it. Let’s be the ones who put a stop to food insecurity in our community! However, in order for that dream to become reality, it will take the support of students and families of WMS in bringing in donations to the large bin located at the Roche Brothers supermarket. Remember, each and every donation helps!
Sincerely,
Larry Lin
