Wellesley’s vernal pool boardwalk

This page was updated April 2026.

The Wellesley vernal pool boardwalk is a 400-foot boardwalk completed in 2019 and accessible from Turner Rd. (located off Weston Rd). A stonedust path from Turner Rd. leads to the accessible boardwalk that takes visitors to a lookout spot at the vernal pool and to the North 40. The project was funded via Community Preservation Act monies from the Wellesley Community Preservation Committee, was overseen by the Wellesley Natural Resources Commission (NRC), and was built by volunteers including from Wellesley Conservation Council.

According to the State of Massachusetts, “Vernal pools typically fill with water in the autumn or winter due to rainfall and rising groundwater and remain ponded through the spring and into summer. Vernal pools dry completely by the middle or end of summer each year, or at least every few years. Occasional drying prevents fish from establishing permanent populations, which is critical to the reproductive success of many amphibian and invertebrate species that rely on breeding habitats free of fish predators.”

The main goals of the project were to improve accessibility to the North 40 for users of all abilities including those with limited mobility; young children and users with strollers; and to enhance visitor access to the vernal pool while preventing user impacts to native vegetation.

The boardwalk is flanked on either side by a stone dust path that was installed by the DPW. Other than that work by the town and some finish work upon completion of the project, the majority of the work was done by volunteers.

The $65k project was funded in two stages by the Wellesley Community Preservation Committee (CPC). The CPC funded an initial $15,000 for design in FY18 and another $50,000 for construction. Design work was completed free of charge by resident Bill Giezentanner.

The viewing platform overlooks the vernal pool. You can pay a visit to frogs, salamanders and more at the vernal pool by accessing the boardwalk. We took this shot in July 2023, a time when it’s more common to see the pool nearly dried up. With over 6″ of rain, however, the pool is as full as during springtime, when melting snow, rain and high groundwater provide the perfect breeding conditions for aquatic creatures. The vernal pool (CPV #32) was certified in 1989. There are 13 additional certified vernal pools in town.
