We reported earlier this week that Thunder Sports’ North Andover store was closing, leaving the Wellesley Square store as the last one standing for the business. Our email to Thunder earlier this week went unanswered, which got us wondering. But now a big closing sign is on the Wellesley store, confirming that the sports equipment and apparel store is on its way out. The recent arrival of City Sports in town couldn’t have helped. Thunder says everything must go, with merchandise marked down 10% to 40%.
Time to use that gift certificate I have… (Update: In fact, did use the certificate and was chatting with the young associate who was helping me out with a purchase. Says he loved working at Thunder and with the people there, and might scout around at such places as Upper Crust Pizzeria for a new job).
Wellesley Square has been battling to refill empty storefronts, and Lacrosse Unlimited has signed on to fill the old Rosie’s space. Meanwhile, works from local artists is brightening up other storefronts in the square and town officials are working with local businesses to come up with ways to draw more businesses to town, including by changing alcohol licensing rules.
In less exciting comings and goings, Wellesley Bank (which is going public) plans to open a branch in Lower Falls, where Century 21 used to be.
