On Monday, January 8, 2018, the Wellesley Board of Selectmen promoted Sergeant Jeff Renzella to the rank of Lieutenant.
Wellesley Police Chief Jack Pilecki appeared before the Board of Selectmen to recommend the promotion. The vacant Lieutenant’s position was previously held by Scott Whittemore, who was promoted in December of 2017 to the rank of Deputy Police Chief.
Chief Pilecki outlined the process of selection to the Board. A written test was given to eligible sergeants candidates, followed by a day-long independent police assessment center. During the assessment center, candidates for promotion are put through several scenarios with veteran police chiefs to determine how they will solve a problem. Candidates are also required to complete a detailed writing assignment about a problem relevant to the town of Wellesley. The candidates are then graded by the assessment team and ranked in order.
Chief Pilecki spoke to the Board about Sergeant Renzella’s accomplishments during his career at the Wellesley Police Department, as well as his contributions to the community as a youth football coach. Following Chief Pilecki’s presentation, the Board voted unanimously to promote Sergeant Renzella to Lieutenant. Lieutenant Renzella will now oversee the department’s patrol division and communication section.
Lieutenant Renzella had his new badge pinned on by his wife, Maura. Following the badge pinning, Lt. Renzella was introduced to the department by his new rank by Chief Pilecki. Lt. Renzella then was saluted by the numerous members of the department that attended the ceremony.
