Wellesley has some artsy new crosswalks at the intersection of Washington and Church Streets that replace the brick-like concrete pavers that had been disintegrating. The situation was becoming dangerous for pedestrians and annoying for neighbors and drivers.
The Wellesley Department of Public Works in September began removing the old material to make way for the new paved surface stamped with a design.
The Select Board discussed the change back in May, opting to go with a gray and white design as a sort of experiment to see what the public and businesses might think about it. The design could find its way onto more crosswalks as the town rethinks its downtown area, with $600,000 approved at Town Meeting to hire a consultant to design and develop plans for the future of Wellesley Square’s streetscape.
