People in Wellesley and surrounding communities reported feeling tremors from an earthquake on Monday morning that was centered near York Harbor, Maine. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake’s magnitude registered at 3.8 and took place about 8 miles underground.
Mrs. Swellesley was visiting a Wellesley Square shop at the time, shortly before 11am. The windows all shook. She and a staff member both noticed . “What was that?” the staff member asked. Mrs. Swellesley said “Maybe a big truck going down Grove Street? But we both agreed that it couldn’t have been that. We shrugged it off and went back to what we were doing…”
Though our phones started vibrating with texts from others in town.
Swellesley Facebook followers, when asked if they’d felt anything, said “yes” and “no.” Those who said “yes” were in places ranging from Poet’s Corner in Wellesley to Keene, NH and Framingham. “Felt it in Framingham. Dog was barking like mad about 30 seconds before the rumbling hit lol…” wrote one poster.
The Wellesley Department posted on social media: “The Wellesley Police station certainly shook a little. ”
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency posted shortly before 11am on social media that it had received reports of shaking, but no damage.
Yes, I felt the tremor before leaving my house at 10:30. Glad it was such a brief occurrence.
My house, near Playhouse, shook at approximately 10:23 am. The was a loud rumble then it felt as though the house was moving. Glassware teetered. The event lasted a few seconds.
