Film screening

DESCRIPTION: Sustainable Wellesley and partners are screening Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics, a 2024 documentary investigating our addiction to plastic and the growing threat of microplastics on human health. Since its premier at the SXSW film festival, it has only been screened at film festivals and community sponsored events like this one.
The event is presented by Sustainable Wellesley with Wellesley’s Climate Action Committee, the Wellesley Health Department, Green Needham, the Needham Board of Health, the Needham League of Women Voters, and the Needham High School Environmental Action Club.

ARTIST: JP Terlizzi, “The Good Dishes”—a series of photographs

DESCRIPTION: Love and food have always been deeply intertwined in JP Terlizzi’s family. Inspired by the legacies we leave for the next generation, “The Good Dishes” honors treasured memories of family gatherings by beautifully integrating fine china, food, and complementary backgrounds. These tablescapes are unique, fresh, tenderly nostalgic, and a visual feast.

DESCRIPTION: Victoria Chang’s most recent award-winning book of poems is With My Back to the World, published in 2024 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Other recent books include The Trees Witness Everything (Copper Canyon Press, 2022), and her nonfiction book, Dear Memory (Milkweed Editions, 2021). She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Chowdhury International Prize in Literature. She is the Bourne Chair in Poetry at Georgia Tech and Director of Poetry@Tech.

DESCRIPTION: This full-length Teen Edition of Anaïs Mitchell’s haunting, jazz-inflected folk opera follows Orpheus’ mythical quest to overcome Hades and regain the favor of his one true love, Eurydice. Rated PG-13.
Wellesley in Bloom
Wellesley’s garden clubs are planning a town wide beautification effort with “Wellesley in Bloom.” Clubs will make 20 gorgeous floral wreaths that will hang on the door fronts of Wellesley merchants from May 3-11. Afterwards, the wreaths will be shared with the community.
Now that should put a spring in everybody’s step.

ARTIST: Leann Shamash presents “Leaves Alone”

DESCRIPTION: Presented in this exhibit, Leaves Alone, is a modest sampling of the thousands of species of plants and trees that inhabit our planet. Monocots or dicots, deciduous or evergreen, leaves are distinctive beings which add beauty, food and productivity to our planet.
ARTIST: Harry Senger presents “American Watercolor Artist”
EXHIBIT LOCATION: Wakelin Room
DESCRIPTION: An artist as well as a psychiatrist, Dr. Senger found common ground in the two fields: both relying on perceptive observation, the finding of essence, and effective communication between people.
