The latest Wellesley, Mass., sports news:
Pitcher Vasil claimed by White Sox
Our Mike Vasil Watch continues, as we follow the professional baseball career of Wellesley’s Vasil.
The 25-year-old right handed pitcher was drafted by the New York Mets in 2021, picked up by the Philadelphia Phillies late last year in the Rule 5 Draft, then flipped to the Tampa Rays for cash. Vasil pitched for the Rays in spring training this year, but was waived by the Rays, and now has been claimed by the Chicago White Sox on their 40-man roster.
With the White Sox starting their season on March 27 and needing to cut their roster to 26 players, we’ll know soon enough whether Vasil makes a major league roster for the first time…
The last Wellesley player to make the big leagues, to our knowledge, was Nate Freiman, in 2013.
First ‘Buck Cup’ awarded
We wrote in January about Wellesley Rec’s high school basketball league honoring John “Buck” Buckley for his many contributions over the years (more than 47) by introducing the “Buck Cup” as an award to be presented to the winner of the boys’ league. This past weekend, Team Hollingsworth earned the first-ever cup.
