If you flip through the Wellesley High School wrestling program, you won’t find much in the way of the familiar Raider pirate logos, but you will find lots shout-outs to “The Monks” alongside a gnarly cartoon wrestler.
According to a blurb in the program titled “The Legend of the Monk,” the wrestlers’ mascot is said to have began as a monkey wearing a singlet.
“Somewhere along the way, monkey was shortened to monk, and The Monk itself became less monkey and more cartoon wrestling creature.”
According to the explanation, “The team may officially be the Wellesley Raiders, but for those in the know, Wellesley’s wrestlers are also The Monks.”
The same is true of the Middle School wrestlers, dubbed the Junior Monks.
The wrestlers have also been known to jump into Morses Pond on New Year’s Day for… the Monk Dunk.
