The latest Wellesley, Mass., business news:
Wellesley Common sign to make a comeback
You might not have realized the Wellesley Common sign above the Lemon Thai restaurant even existed until it was gone, leaving a murky shadow in its place after a winter storm knocked it off.
We had no luck months ago getting an answer about its fate, but saw recently that a new & less detailed version of the sign was being proposed to replace the fallen one.
An outfit called East West Enterprises sent a rep to the Wellesley Design Review Board meeting on Sept. 25 (see Wellesley Media recording) to make a pitch for the new sign made of synthetic material instead of wood. The new sign would have a plain green center rather than the design in the previous version that featured a couple of shamrocks and what appeared to be a flower, maybe a clover.
The Design Review Board expressed some blah-ness about the plain middle of the oval, though the designer representing East West said the current owners didn’t feel any attachment to the old design. One member described the new design as looking like the center of a dartboard. “It’s a missed opportunity,” the board member said.
The designer pledged to bring the feedback to the client, but we’ll see what materializes.
