Attendees at this month’s meeting of the Wellesley Club civic organization got a real treat when they sat down at their tables at the country club: An authentic slice of Wellesley Fudge Cake.
Wellesley College gives students credit for originating the recipe in the late 1800s after school founder Henry Durant stated, “pies, lies, and doughnuts should never have a place in Wellesley College.” Students got their sweets fix by coming up with a chocolate layer cake topped with fudge frosting, so the legend goes.
The cake became popular in the early 1900s across town at tearooms and restaurants, and Wellesley Club curataor Tory DeFazio says the cake helped the town celebrate its centennial in 1981.
The Wellesley Club celebrated with Wellesley Fudge Cake at its 125th anniversary meeting at the Harvard Club in Boston, and now 10 years later served the dessert to acknowledge the group’s 135th anniversary.
“I gave a copy of the recipe to the Country Club prior to [the Nov. 20] meeting and the head chef ‘went to town (!)’ and did a masterful job. It was delicious don’t you think?”
