The Wellesley Symphony Orchestra will present its annual family concert on Sunday, March 23, 2pm, at Mass Bay Community College, 50 Oakland St., Wellesley Hills. “Hymns to Nature,” will include music by Rossini, Smetana, and Copland. Also, the winner of the 2024 WSO Michael H. Welles Young Soloist Competition, Maggie Bai, will play the first movement of Schumann’s beloved Piano Concerto.
Gioachino Rossini’s overture to “The Thieving Magpie” describes a bird (the magpie) who steals silver spoons. Bedřich Smetana’s tone poem “Ma Vlast” includes odes to his fatherland, Czechoslovakia, including the tribute to the Moldau, the river that flows through his country. We return to America for Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring,” the ballet that he wrote for Martha Graham’s dance troupe. The music depicts a young couple on the day of their wedding and their dreams for starting a new life on a farm.
We will also be joined by 4th and 5th grade string students from the Wellesley Public Schools, under the direction of our principal cellist, Seth MacLeod.
