When we saw the Town of Wellesley press release titled “Take a Leak Detection Test!” we couldn’t quite tell if they were making a stab at potty humor or just stating the facts. Either way, we’re not going to be outdone on the former as we write about magic tablets being distributed by the Water & Sewer Division to help people detect possible toilet leaks and avoid higher bills.
Now Mrs. Swellesley is no fan of toilet humor. She’s had enough of that raising a husband and two sons.
But Mr. Swellesley, well, he’s a guy, and sometimes can’t help himself. After all, duty calls.
Plus, a little toilet humor could help us attract that younger demographic we’ve been after. C’mon toddlers, look what we have.
The Water & Sewer Division has made sure that the town is flush with free water leak detection tablets. They’re available through May 17 at the DPW engineering desk, MLP lobby, Tolles Parsons Center, Wellesley Free Library and RDF Refundable Bottle and Can shed.
We picked some up at the library, and put our iPhone-equipped film crew on the job before plopping the tablets into our toilet tank. Admittedly, I was a bit drained after making the porcelain sparkle for its big moment on TikTok..

I also confess to making the mistake of using No. 2 instead of No. 1 tablets as the instructions read. But oh well, our commode passed with flying non-colors—the water would have turned blue if there was a leak. No deteriorated flapper valve or rogue lift chain here.
During a recent Board of Public Works meeting when the tablet giveaway was discussed, one board member did ask: Why not just use the DPW’s Water Customer Portal to monitor things? You can, and it is sensitive, but the tablets are way more fun.
OK, time to go…
