There are three post offices in Wellesley including a little-known hole-in-the-wall outpost at the edge of town. That’s the one you’ll be happy you know about when it comes time to mail holiday gifts.
Mail fishing remains a problem in Wellesley. According to Lt. Cleary in summer 2023, “Since the fall of 2019, the Wellesley Police Department has been periodically inundated with check fraud reports stemming from checks that have been placed into the U.S. Mail via blue USPS collection boxes throughout town.”
The recommended course of action for the public—do not mail letters containing checks or money in blue USPS collection boxes. If you must use a collection box, be sure to place your mail in the box before the last collection of the day.
Personally, we wouldn’t put so much as a thank you note into one of the blue boxes, for fear it would get scooped up during a theft, never get to its intended destination, and we would be branded dinner party ingrates.

Not-so-fun-fact: Fishing happens here regularly (as well as at the other post offices). In November 2023, suspects were nabbed in the theft of 1,000+ pieces of mail after fleeing Wellesley.
August 2023: According to Lt. Cleary, “Since the fall of 2019, the Wellesley Police Department has been periodically inundated with check fraud reports stemming from checks that have been placed into the U.S. Mail via blue USPS collection boxes throughout town.”
Despite the U.S. Postal Service replacing pull-down handles on mailboxes with thin slots in recent years, mail fishing has persisted.

Boston Marathon and mail service, 2024
If you want to stop off at the post office on Marathon Day, go right ahead. Just because locals treat Marathon Day like a federal holiday doesn’t mean that it actually is one. All post offices in Massachusetts are open on the big day, even those right on the route. But if you wanted to slide your bills into one of the familiar blue post office boxes outside the post office, or those dotted around town, it was no go. The convenient blue boxes were on lockdown all along the 2024 Boston Marathon route as a safety measure., and have been on the big day ever since the 2013 Marathon bombing. Also on hand along the entire course: a heavy law enforcement presence including various resources from the police departments of 30 Massachusetts cities and towns; military police, German Shepherds, and more.
