David Ieong, currently assistant principal at Israel Loring Elementary School in Sudbury, is headed to Wellesley to become the new principal of Bates Elementary School. Bates parents were given the word on Friday.
Ieong (pronounced “young”) will replace Michael Spencer after this school year ends.
The incoming Bates principal says he is “honored and humbled” to be hired by Wellesley, where he says he will bring “vision for leadership that is child-centered, along with a modern understanding of instruction and student learning.” Ieong says he has 19 years of experience in elementary school education.
The Loring School at which Ieong now works has been making strides on its MCAS results, according to recent reports.
Asked if he has had any connection to Wellesley, Ieong volunteered that he played Herr Schultz in a 2009 Wellesley Players production of “Cabaret”.
“I made many friends in town during that time, and grew quite fond of the community,” he says.
Spencer, who became principal of Bates in 2008, informed Wellesley Public Schools of his plans to leave recently so that they could get a head start on hiring. Spencer is looking for a job closer to where he lives.
