Wellesley’s renovated Memorial Grove honors those who served in World War I

Wellesley has been making plans to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War one by sprucing up Memorial Grove and adding a new bench to honor residents who died in the Great War. The Grove is located near the small parking lot that serves the track, football, field, and Fuller Brook Park.

326 Wellesley residents out of a town population of 6,000 served in the war. A granite bench overlooking the State Street Pond honors them. The pond was dredged and refurbished in 2015 as part of the Fuller Brook Park project.

As you circle the bench, each side is engraved. In all, it reads, “Honoring Wellesley residents who gave their lives and those who served in the Great War, World War I, 1917 – 1918.

In 1968 on the 50th anniversary of the war, a stone was placed in the grove. The engraving says, “In memory of Wellesley servicemen who died in World War I.” The names of the six servicemen who died are listed on the stone. They are: Raymond J. Moore; Patrick O’Donahue; Franklin Temple Ingraham; James C. Glencross; Texas Burton

A plaque explains the meaning behind Memorial Grove. A dedication ceremony for the grove will be held on May 19, 3:30pm, during Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend.
