Wellesley school news: Schofield Shopper’s Corner reopens Wednesday; Fiske Western Round-Up Sept. 17; Kids Backing Kids delivers 200-plus backpacks

September 12, 2022 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

The latest Wellesley school news:

Schofield Shopper’s Corner reopens Wednesday

Schofield Elementary School’s Shopper’s Corner, a parent volunteer-un consignment shop that’s been around since the 1950s, reopens its doors this Wednesday, Sept. 14 for the new school year. The shop is generally open Wednesdays throughout the school year and the first Saturday of the month, and all proceeds benefit the Schofield PTO, which supports school-related programs.

Carrie Sullivan, a mom to three Schofield kids and one of Shopper’s Corner’s co-chairs, says the shop stayed open throughout the pandemic on a 1-to-1 appointment basis and saw revenue jump from before the pandemic. Then last year’s sales doubled those of the previous year. “It was very helpful for the Schofield PTO budget given that so many traditional fundraising vehicles were unavailable,” said Sullivan, who added that many bonds were formed during these private shopping appointments.

Shopper's Corner

Shopper’s Corner was the lucky recipient of a lot of pandemic inventory. “A  lot of people had lots of time to participate in COVID closet cleaning,” says Sullivan, who is co-chairing the shop with Liz O’Connor and Courtney Nascimento.

Over the last two years, Shopper’s Corner volunteers have developed an informal notification system to match buyers with needs. This includes reaching out to refugee family coordinators who might express a need for items, such as boys’ baby clothes.

“We have matched buyers with a wide range of items; everything from a pair of size 7 boots for the Schofield social worker, a Magic Tree House book for a customer’s daughter, Austin Powers boots for a Halloween costume, or something with ‘historic’ significance such as a vintage Schofield t-shirt for an incoming Kindergarten family!” Sullivan says.

Sullivan says the human side of their shoppers has come shining through. “One customer comes in and buys t-shirts that she turns into purses for women at shelters. Another customer couldn’t believe her luck when she found a series of vintage shoes in her size (size 6!) that were preserved in their original boxes-with printed sales receipts- from 1973.”

Oftentimes Schofield parents drop by just to chat with volunteers. “Though as the saying goes, in Shopper’s Corner, you can never, ever ‘just browse,'” she says.

Fiske Western Round-Up Sept. 17

Fiske Elementary School’s Western Round-Up fun fair, open to the public, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10am-2pm. We’re hoping that the event, formerly known as the Wild West Round-Up, won’t be too tame now that it has dropped “Wild” from its name.

The fair, at 45 Hastings St., features games, rides, crafts, food, and more.

It’s cash-only, and takes place rain or shine.

Kids Backing Kids delivers 200-plus backpacks

Non-profit Kids Backing Kids started the school year by delivering more than 200 backpacks to students whose families needed a helping hand. Students in pre-K through high school in Wellesley, Newton, Needham, and Dorchester received new backpacks filled with supplies needed to get off to a great start this school year.

Kids Backing Kids also delivered more than 500 boxes of school supplies to community partners so they can replenish supplies for students throughout the school year.

This third annual back-to-school drive was made possible by donations of backpacks, supplies, and money from many throughout the community.

A fresh start for Schofield, Wellesley Public Schools on opening day

August 31, 2022 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

We joined the Schofield Elementary School opening day crowd on Wednesday morning, figuring it would be the place to be with new Principal Jordan Hoffman starting her Wellesley career after hopping the border from Natick.

Rain had cleared to make for a sunny welcoming scene that included Supt. Dr. David Lussier saying “Hello” to kids, parents, and guardians in this year’s mask-optional environment.

Hoffman could be heard introducing herself to new students, telling some that it was her first day of school too at Schofield. “We’ve all been looking forward to this,” Hoffman told me.

One parent shared appreciation for Hoffman diving right in and helping to direct traffic among parents’ vehicles and buses.

All in all, it seemed like perfectly expected controlled chaos as staff directed students to their proper lines, and kids started to funnel into the building, no doubt already eager to hit the playground and playing fields for their first recess.

Schofield Elementary Principal Martinez leaving Wellesley for Lexington

March 24, 2022 by Bob Brown 1 Comment

Schofield Elementary School Principal Gerardo Martinez, a finalist for several local superintendent and school administration jobs recently, has accepted a new principalship position in Lexington, Mass., according to Wellesley Public Schools.

Gerardo MartinezWe’ve reached out to Principal Martinez for more details and will update this post if we get additional information.

Martinez has been principal of Wellesley’s Schofield Elementary School since 2011.

Among his other involvement in town has been as a director on the Kids Backing Kids board. A man of many talents, Martinez is giving boxing lessons as a prize at Schofield’s upcoming school auction.

Wellesley Public Schools has had stability at its principal positions in recent years. The last new one was Grant Smith in 2021 at Hardy, but there has been relatively little turnover of late at that level.

The departure of Martinez deals Wellesley Public Schools’ staff diversity efforts a blow, alongside the exit of its diversity, equity & inclusion director.

WPS Human Resources Director Monica Visco said during this week’s School Committee meeting that the Schofield principal job posting is up. It’s elicited a decent response in terms of the number of applicants, though not much in the way of diversity, she said.

Readers: We encourage you to send us communications from the schools if you think this public information should be shared with the wider Wellesley community:  theswellesleyreport@gmail.com

Schofield principal comes close to getting Dover-Sherborn, Rockport superintendent jobs

January 19, 2022 by Bob Brown 1 Comment

The Dover Sherborn Public Schools system has chosen one of its current administrators for its top job, denying finalist candidate and Wellesley’s Schofield Elementary School Principal Gerardo Martinez the opportunity. Dover Sherborn went with Elizabeth McCoy, its current Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning.

Schofield Elementary School 2013Martinez, longtime principal at Schofield, has been in the running for multiple other jobs for which he has come close but not been chosen. He was a finalist in Framingham for its Assistant Superintendent for Equity, Diversity, and Community Engagement job and for Rockport Public Schools’ superintendent position.

Martinez has been principal of Wellesley’s Schofield Elementary School since 2011.

Wellesley Public Schools has had some serious stability at its principal positions in recent years. The last new one was Grant Smith last year at Hardy.

Schofield Elementary School Principal Martinez a finalist for Framingham schools’ equity & diversity job

December 14, 2021 by Bob Brown 3 Comments

Update (12/17/21): Martinez is also one of three finalists for the superintendent’s job at Dover-Sherborn Public Schools.

Update (12/20/21): Martinez was not selected for the Framingham job.

Gerardo Martinez, principal of Wellesley’s Schofield Elementary School since 2011, is one of two finalists for Framingham Public Schools’ Assistant Superintendent for Equity, Diversity, and Community Engagement job.

The search has been on since September, and is down to Martinez and Tiffany Lillie, currently the director of dommunity resource development for Framingham Public Schools.

Gerardo MartinezThe public is invited to a ‘Meet the Candidates’ online forum on Tuesday, Dec. 14  from 6 – 7:10pm. Each candidate will have 30 minutes to offer an introduction to the community, as well as to answer attendee-submitted questions. (Webinar link & Passcode 395687).

Martinez has six years of teaching experience and 21 years of administrative experience. Before Schofield, he held principal positions in Brookline and Boston Public Schools.

On Martinez’s principal’s page on the Schofield website, it starts off: “It is my pleasure to be embarking on year 10 as Schofield’s principal and I cannot imagine being anywhere else!!”

He’s now started to imagine.

Wellesley Public Schools has had some serious stability at its principal positions in recent years. The last new one was Grant Smith last year at Hardy.

Schofield scraps 5K race, but makes “Stays Home” T-shirts available

May 5, 2020 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

The Schofield PTO has canceled the 27th Annual Schofield 5K Road Race & Fun Fair in light of the coronavirus crisis.

I actually ran the painfully hilly course a couple of weeks ago, for kicks. Longfellow Road, yikes.

A less painful way to pay homage to the event would be purchasing a Schofield Stays Homee 2020 T-shirt for $15, available for early June delivery.

Order now using this form, payment through Venmo preferred. https://tinyurl.com/SchofieldStaysHome
