Wellesley’s Pups in the Park raises funds for animal welfare

May 18, 2025 by Maya Hazarika

The Rotary Club of Wellesley on Saturday afternoon hosted its annual Pups in the Park event on Hunnewell Field as part of Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend.

Participants paid $20 per dog to enter their pets into a series of dog contents, with categories such as “Cutest Pup.” “Biggest Ears,” and “Best Kisser.” All proceeds benefited International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) animal welfare efforts.

Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including a pup parade, live music, face painting, and food from local vendors. There were prizes for the best-dressed dogs, and plenty of treats for both pets and their owners. Local businesses and organizations also joined the event, offering a chance for the community to connect while supporting a good cause.

The Rotary Club’s commitment to improving lives both locally and globally was evident in the event’s focus on animal welfare. The funds raised will help support IFAW’s work in providing care for animals affected by disasters and conflict worldwide.

Separately, the Rotary Club is hosting Taste of Wellesley on May 21 (6:30-9pm) at Wellesley Country Club. Tickets are available at Roche Bros., The Windsor Press and online.

Saturday scenes from Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend

May 17, 2025 by Bob Brown

We did the rounds—along with seemingly everyone else within miles—at Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend attractions on Saturday and the events didn’t disappoint.

If you were looking to climb on vehicles from the scariest looking Department of Public Works and Municipal Light Plant trucks to the loudest fire vehicles and wettest fire hose games, you came to the right places if you hit those open houses.

I overheard one mom, if I interpreted correctly, advising her kid to go into the fire engine manufacturing business after hearing about how much they go for.

DPW Director Dave Cohen termed the DPW open house “a blowout” success.

If you were looking for a little exercise, members of the military were more than happy to run you through their family boot camp, maybe giving you a break on the amount of weight that they typically lug.

And if you were looking for some afternoon sustenance, the Wellesley Police Department had you covered with their usual hot dogs and fixings spread. Oh, and lots of great swag, from stickers to police trading cards. I actually did hear about a crime on my rounds at Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend: A Swellesley reader told me he couldn’t figure out how to donate to support our work (here’s how).

When we saw fire vehicles show up at the police station we figured maybe the officers had turned up the heat too high on the dogs. It turned out to be a routine fire box issue—though suspiciously convenient for firefighters at lunchtime.

Meanwhile, over at the Royal Irish Artillery encampment next door at Morton Park the re-enactors were wrestling with a beast of a turkey on a spit. In hindsight, that might have been a healthier lunch choice if they were sharing.

Others filled up at earlier at the annual pancake festival at the high school, where teens were doing a heck of a job serving up pancakes, waffles, and more. When I asked one family how they heard about the event, they gave the right answer: “The Swellesley Report.”

Wellesley Veterans Parade to feature 8-foot high balloons honoring the military

May 16, 2025 by admin

For the first time in its 57-year history, the Wellesley Veterans Parade on Sunday, May 18 (1-3pm) will feature three giant 8-foot helium balloons—much like those you typically see in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Inflating the balloons will be supervised by Dr. Brian O’Connor, a Wellesley resident and veteran who served in as a doctor in a MASH unit during the Afghanistan War.

The three balloons will be guided down the street by members of the Wellesley High School lacrosse and football teams, supervised by Coach Jerry Nigro of the Wellesley Lacrosse team as well as members of the Wellesley Country Club (the title sponsor of the parade on Sunday).  Each balloon has a 7 pound lift and four residents of Wellesley will handle each balloon.

The balloons will each feature the logo of a specific service—U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps. and  U.S. Navy.  These three services were founded in 1775.  The theme of this year’s parade celebrates the 250th anniversary of each.

Wellesley’s Linden Square gets yarn bombed

May 14, 2025 by Bob Brown

Wellesley’s already vibrant Linden Square courtyard has been given an extra color boost thanks to the handiwork of knitters and crocheters under the guidance of the Art Wellesley outfit.

Art Wellesley this past winter hosted a series of knitting and crochet classes at the library, knitting and crochet circles at area restaurants and private homes, and knitting classes at the high school—leading up to a community yarn bomb event installed on May 14 and that will be up until May 30.

Art Wellesley will formally celebrate the public display as part of the Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend activities this coming weekend. From noon-2pm on Saturday, May 17, the public is invited to stop by, enjoy music from Some Assembly Required, weather permitting. Feel free to bring your yarn and knit or crochet while there.

“We discovered yarn bombing while we were researching community art projects. It seems like a beautiful, vibrant way to energise a public space. I’m a colour lover, so it was especially appealing to me,” says Art Wellesley’s Annie Newman.

“All of this felt like a good old-fashioned quilting bee. People of all ages working together to create this community project. We engaged at least 150 people and the project includes over 300 11-in. samplers,” she says.

Depending upon how the knitted material survives the weather, the display might be exhibited elsewhere in the future. “If it doesn’t fare well, we plan to share the blankets with an animal shelter,” Newman says.

Premier Yarns, Linden Square, First Byte Designs, the Wellesley Free Library, the Wellesley Cultural Council and the Community Fund for Wellesley supported this project.

Wellesley Select Board gets update on blackout plan; votes on summer hours; preps for Wonderful Weekend

May 7, 2025 by Bob Brown

The May 6 Wellesley Select Board meeting was one of the wonkier ones in recent memory, with big chunks devoted to policy discussions and meeting minute approvals. But the Board also heard an update on how the town might handle a power blackout in the wake of the major outage in Portugal and Spain, discussed and voted on town employee summer hours, and previewed Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend activities. (See Wellesley Media recording to watch the whole thing.)

Emergency planning

Upon receiving questions from the community about how the town might handle a blackout, Executive Director Meghan Jop invited Fire Chief Steve Mortarelli and Deputy Chief Chuck DiGiandomenico to share an update on Wellesley’s emergency plan.

“In the event that there was a power outage in Wellesley, we have plenty of fail-safes in place to keep communications systems going so that there would be little to no interruption to any emergency communications in town,” DiGiandomenico said. For starters, repeaters at Maugus Hill and Wellesley College would switch on emergency power via generators, he said. The Warren Building and Babson College also have backup systems.

Any loss of power triggers alerts to the dispatch systems and designated public safety officials. The town also has its own fiber cabling and that has backup power to keep it going.

If there were an outage for more than 24 hours, the high school would be made available as an emergency center. There are plenty of cots and other resources there, though it was acknowledged the center probably wouldn’t get much use unless it was extremely hot or cold outside.

A plan to audit the plan is in the works, and efforts are underway to sync up with the Health Department, Municipal Light Plant, and other departments. Having a handle on the whereabouts of hazardous materials in town would also be part of the plan. Regional (Local Emergency Planning Committee, etc.) and statewide (via the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency) coordination is also part of this plan.

Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend

Moving on to Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend—approaching fast on the weekend of May 17-18 with its usual lineup of open houses veterans parade and fireworks—Board Member Beth Sullivan Woods talked about the latest. And actually, related activities are on tap leading into that weekend.

These include the dressing of graves at Woodlawn Cemetery on May 10 (volunteers welcome) and a series of talks on May 12 (7-8:30pm) at Town Hall dubbed “Untold Stories from the Cold War to Today’s Battlefields” (this features U.S. Army, Marine Corps., and Navy
veterans).

New this year on Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend, from 2-4pm on May 17, will be an open house at the renovated Town Hall.

Summer hours

Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend is the town’s pre-summer kickoff, and Wellesley is also prepping for summer by nailing down summer hours for employees at Town Hall and 888 Worcester St. The hours are 8am-5pm, Monday-Thursday, 8am-noon on Fridays, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. One exception is on Aug. 1, when tax bills are due: Town Hall will be open until 5pm that day.

Other updates:

  • Runners participating in the Boston Marathon through Wellesley’s charity bibs raised nearly $196,000, the highest total ever for the town.
  • The Council on Aging Board has proposed that the Tolles Parsons Center kitchen be named in honor of Richard Campana. The Select Board held a public hearing on the topic on May 6, with plans to vote on May 20.  Separately, the Select Board discussed its role in appointing Council on Aging Board members, with four vacancies coming up in June. Select Board Chair Colette Aufranc said the Council on Aging Board warrants special focus this year in light of a needs assessment of the senior community being conducted and upcoming kitchen construction. The COA Board is also awaiting results of a handful of audits and reviews on the COA.
  • Wellesley will again celebrate the accessible mini-high platforms at the Wellesley Square commuter rail station on Friday, May 9 at 2:10pm. The platforms went into operation in February. The town last summer celebrated federal funding secured to allow the project’s completion. Meanwhile, in Natick…

Saturday scene at Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend 2024

May 18, 2024 by Bob Brown

With Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend, you could really make a day of it on Saturday, and many did.

Some early risers hit the trails at 9am for a guided walk with the Wellesley Trails Committee in the Guernsey Sanctuary and to the Waban Arches.

More than a dozen walkers turned out despite light rain for Saturday’s trail walk in the Guernsey Sanctuary and to Waban Arches led by Wellesley Trails Committee member Diane Hall, who in this photo is highlighting the non-native cork tree that has grown over the path. Other early birds followed the trail at Wellesley High School from the kitchen to the cafeteria, where they munched on pancakes, waffles, and more courtesy of the Kiwanis Club, Key Club, and other volunteers.

When I stopped by the kitchen was doing a brisk business, though the report from the gluten-free station was that things were a little slow there. I did some table hopping and customers seemed satisfied, with many making trips back to the kitchen for seconds and maybe more. Select Board member Beth Sullivan Woods said there was even an inquiry for the waffle recipe.

I got caught up in some good conversation about the Wellesley recycling center, including one classic tale of finding a hard-to-open safe there that the finder never did get open (though he handed it off to a colleague who may or may not have—he promised not to disclose what the contents were to my narrator). Another diner shared his thoughts on the challenges for builders of adhering to the energy codes adopted by the town in recent years. And another breakfast patron gladly posed for a family photo, joking that “My kids always get in Swellesley, but I never do!”

By the time I left the pancakes and visited the Touch-A-Truck event at the Department of Public Works, the huge crowd I’d heard about from my breakfast sources had thinned out. “I hear there were a thousand people there waiting for them to open at 9,” one event organizer told me at the [Read more…]
