Here’s the updated daily weather forecast for Wellesley, MA, from Thursday, November 28 to Thursday, December 5 by Meteorologist Matthew Moll of New England Weather Consulting:

Wellesley, MA, will experience heavy rain on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 28), which could affect travel and outdoor activities. After Thursday, a shift to drier and colder conditions will bring more winter-like weather. Friday and the weekend will see mostly sunny skies with highs in the 40s and chilly nights in the 20s and 30s. This colder trend will continue into early December, with daytime temperatures in the 30s and clear, cold nights, signaling the arrival of more winter-like conditions.

Thursday, November 28 (Thanksgiving Day): Cloudy with heavy, windswept rain in the afternoon. Highs around 46°F. Winds will be from the east at 8-12 mph. Expect rainy conditions later in the day to continue, which will impact outdoor activities or gatherings. Rain will taper in the overnight hours. Rain amounts between 0.75” and 1” are likely. Evening temperatures will dip to around 37°F, so plan for rain and cooler weather for any evening plans.

Friday, November 29: Mostly sunny with some clouds appearing in the afternoon. Highs around 45°F. Winds from the northwest at 5-7 mph. Evening lows will be around 32°F under cloudy skies, with a slight chance of rain or snow showers overnight. Black Friday shopping or post-Thanksgiving walks should have no weather-related impacts.

Saturday, November 30: Partly sunny with highs near 42°F. Winds will be light from the west at 5-8 mph. By evening, temperatures will fall to around 27°F under partly cloudy skies, leading to a cold night. Excellent for outdoor holiday decorating or brisk hikes. Dress warmly for outdoor sports or events, especially after sunset when temperatures drop.

Sunday, December 1: Mostly sunny with highs reaching 39°F. Light winds from the southwest at 4-6 mph. Evening temperatures will drop to 26°F under clear skies, making for a chilly night. A perfect day for outdoor family activities, such as hiking. Evening outdoor plans will require layers to stay warm.

Monday, December 2:
Partly cloudy with highs around 38°F. Winds from the northwest at 6-9 mph. Evening lows will be around 23°F under mostly clear skies. Great for errands or light outdoor activities, but the cool winds may make it uncomfortable for prolonged time outdoors.

Tuesday, December 3: Increasing clouds with highs near 38°F. Winds will be light from the north at 5-7 mph. Overnight temperatures will fall to 24°F under mostly cloudy skies. Late evening walks will require you to bundle up due to colder temperatures.

Wednesday, December 4: Cloudy with highs around 38°F. Winds from the northeast at 7-10 mph. Evening lows will drop to 22°F under cloudy skies, with a chance of snow showers overnight.

Thursday, December 5: Partly sunny with highs near 35°F. Winds from the northwest at 5-8 mph. Evening temperatures will fall to 22°F under partly cloudy skies, leading to a cold night. Good weather for light outdoor activities, such as walks or errands. Bundle up for early morning or evening events as temperatures will feel quite cold.

Thanksgiving conversation starter: Wellesley issues preliminary real estate property assessments

The Wellesley Board of Assessors on Wednesday released the fiscal year 2025 preliminary assessments. Based on viewing a limited sample, they aren’t going down in value.

The town says “preliminary/proposed assessments are made available through a public disclosure program conducted by the assessors as part of the Department of Revenue (DOR) Certification that takes place every five years.”

The proposed assessments are available until Thursday, Dec. 5 for review online or in-person at the Assessor’s office  at 888 Worcester St., Suite 140. The office can be reached by phone at 781-431-1019 ext. 2275.

Wellesley Police: Man gets ‘life-threatening electrical shock’ installing holiday lights

The Wellesley Police Department reports that a man apparently got “a life-threatening electrical shock” while installing holiday lights on a large tree on Falmouth Circle on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at around 10 am. After being treated at the scene, the man was transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital for additional treatment, then transferred to the Massachusetts General Hospital (no further status on the man’s condition was provided).

The initial investigation revealed that a large pole used by the contractor to string holiday lights for a resident came into close proximity or actually contacted the primary electrical line on the top of a nearby utility pole. The victim was apparently electrocuted when this contact was made, and a 911 call was made.

The 911 caller was instructed by a police dispatcher to perform CPR until officers arrived on the scene shortly thereafter. The Wellesley Fire Department, Municipal Light Plant, and a mutual aid paramedic ambulance from the Needham Fire Department were looped into the response.

Police officers determined the man appeared to be in cardiac arrest and took over performing CPR. Police and fire personnel set up an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to deliver shocks that appear to have revived the victim. A paramedic ambulance from Needham Fire arrived and began rendering advanced life support care before the man was transported to the hospital.

During a safety check by the WMLP, it was determined that the utility pole itself was of no danger to the public. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) personnel are also involved now in the investigation.

Pre-Thanksgiving action in Wellesley

I didn’t quite get the money shot this year outside Wasik’s Cheese Shop at either 9am or 11AM. The line only stretched to about Wellesley Toy Shop two storefronts down when I swung by for the second time.

Apparently 9:30am was the time to get there for a classic photo, one employee working the line that was there at 11am said, as the store opened at 10. The line earlier swelled another few storefronts down at that point.

Meanwhile, down in lower falls, a brave turkey was taking in the sights.

This turkey has been hanging around the Lower Falls area of late, “peering into businesses, wandering around CVS, and stalking delivery trucks,” writes reader Jean Bae, who shared this photo. (The bird’s antics have been the topic of much discussion on the What’s Up Wellesley Facebook group.).

Wellesley election 2025—League of Women Voters info session, “How to Run for Public Office”

The League of Women Voters of Wellesley  will hold an information session on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 7pm-8:30pm, in the Warren Building, 90 Washington St., for those interested learning more about running for Town Meeting or one of Wellesley’s Elected Boards.

Find out how Wellesley’s Town Government is structured and about the boards that make it up. Learn from Wellesley residents who have served our community about what it is like to be on Town Meeting or an Elected Board. The information session will also cover how to run a campaign and the timing for March 2025 election—nomination papers can be obtained in person from the Town Clerk December 4-January 10.

Wellesley functions thanks to dedicated citizen volunteers who run for Elected Boards (our Executive Branch) and Town Meeting (our Legislative Branch).  The town’s 10 elected Boards oversee everything in town from schools, to  the library, to public health, and 240 elected Town Meeting Members. Wellesley needs you! There are no special qualifications for serving in office. Some boards require members to be a registered voter, but any resident can run for Town Meeting.

Wellesley School Committee decision on Academic Calendar Task Force recommendations could come Dec. 10

Since the Academic Calendar Task force on Oct. 24 presented its recommendation to the School Committee about school holidays starting in SY2025-26, the Committee has discussed the matter over the course of three meetings, while continuing to take feedback from the community.

With the Task Force’s 14-4 vote, the group recommend an option for SY2025-26 that retains Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as holidays; adds Lunar New Year and either Eid Al-Fitr or Eid Al-Adha, depending on the year; and removes Good Friday and Diwali.

Good Friday, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur have been part of the school calendar for decades, while Diwali, Eid al-Fitr, and Lunar New Year made their first appearances this year, bringing the number of religious/cultural holidays up to six for SY2024-25.

Before making this final recommendation, the Task Force considered other options including a three-holiday calendar model that rotates holidays from year to year, and a model that retains all six holidays every year. A rotating three-holiday calendar model would have the disadvantage of disappointing many, but spreading that disappointment around. A model that retains all six holidays could cause the school year to run later into June. Add a bunch of snow days, and for sure, the days of school ending on June 13, as it did in 2024, would likely be over if a six-holiday model were adopted.

The final, final decision

The School Committee will meet on Dec. 10, but there’s no guarantee that they are going to vote on the Task Force’s recommendation at that meeting. Also, if the School Committee does vote, there is no guarantee that the vote would reflect acceptance of the Task Force’s recommendation. It’s important to note that during its discussion on Nov. 19, the School Committee did not formally take any models off the table.

At this point, what we know is that School Committee Linda Chow in an email to The Swellesley Report’s request for comment expressed gratitude to the Task Force for its work gathering data, running focus groups, tabulating survey results, and coming up with models. “The Committee plans further discussion on December 10,” Chow continued, “as well as a potential vote on both an overall model and the academic calendar for the 2025-26 school year.”

A potential vote. So Dec. 10 may or may not bring the final word on the matter of school holidays. Stay tuned.
