The Wellesley Police Department has signed on with an outfit called GovDelivery to improve its system for notifying citizens about emergencies and other matters of public interest.
Citizens can sign up for free and decide what type of messages (cell phone text messages, regular email, or both) they receive as well as how frequently.
Categories of information available include emergency alerts (including serious crimes), WPD website updates, power/utility updates, severe weather alerts, traffic updates, sex offender info, child passenger safety seat info and even job openings on the force. Messages sent by WPD’s phone notification system can also be received now as email or text alerts.
To sign up, visit the front page of www.WellesleyPolice.com. There is a quick sign-up link located in the lower right hand corner, underneath the slide show. Please ensure that you sign up for email alerts, and then repeat the process for text alerts. Click HERE for a direct link to the sign up page. If you have trouble creating an account, and would like the Wellesley Police Department to create an account for you, email Sergeant Scott Whittemore at swhittemore@wellesleyma.gov.
Alerts sent out will also be cross-posted to Twitter, under our two accounts, @WellesleyPolice and @WPDPhoto
The NIXLE alerting system that had been used was getting too pricy and will no longer be used by Wellesley as of April 29, according to WPD.
