In its latest effort to reach out to the public, the Wellesley Police Department has launched a Facebook page. The first post is about this past week’s Youth Academy, and the page features bunches of photos, including of a car fire and the Pan Mass Challenge.
The department already has a website, photo website, Twitter account (1,300+ followers strong) and uses an online alert system. A smartphone app and other social media efforts are also in the works.
“The Chief and Deputy Chief want to continue to reach out to the community using all of the social media available to us,” says Sgt. Scott Whittemore. “Facebook is just one more tool that we can keep the public informed about the types of work we do on a regular basis. Not only can we post real time information (which is something we want to be the best at) but we want to post things like our stats and feature articles. We also want to do more video work (shorter, quicker clips) from incident scenes. Facebook is a good tool for all of this, especially to post items quickly from the street… I know other police departments across the country are using Facebook and report positive feedback.”
