Wellesley Public Schools’ head of educational technology announced on Wednesday that WHS data was actually not compromised in the cyberattack on Instructure’s Canvas learning management system earlier this month.

Thousands of schools worldwide were affected by the initial shutdown of Canvas following cyberattacks in late April, then early May that put user data from some schools in jeopardy. Instructure has since been providing apologies and regular updates, including assurances that stolen data was returned and copies destroyed.

While Instructure brought its Canvas system back after the early May attack, Wellesley Public Schools in the immediate aftermath kept its edition disabled based on legal advice. WPS restored the system in mid-May.

Students in Wellesley had said the temporary loss of Canvas access made studying for tests and completing assignments more challenging.

In a statement this week from WPS Director of Educational Technology Dr. Adam Steiner, he wrote: “We continue to track the mitigation steps implemented by Canvas to ensure the safety of the platform.”
