Here’s the rag that caused Wellesley’s Sweeney Todd fire

November 14, 2017 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Sweeney Todd rag
Bad rag!

The Wellesley Fire Department, which responded quickly to contain a “smoke condition” on the stage Saturday night during Wellesley High’s final performance of Sweeney Todd, has shared a photo with us of the rag that sparked the commotion.

The situation, which forced an evacuation of the building on a chilly night, added to what was already a dramatic night of bloody and musical theatre that featured faux fire and smokey props as it was.

Wellesley Fire Chief Rick DeLorie says: “The rag fell onto a stage light and resulted in a smoke condition. The fire alarm cleared the building, the audience, cast and crew, all did exactly what should be done to keep everyone safe. The firefighters’ response was fast, they cleared out the smoke, then the show continued…”

Here are a few pics of other goings on during a very busy Saturday at Wellesley High School…

Eating more pie during Sweeney Todd intermission.

We ate more pie at our house, thanks to Sweeney Todd. The Parents of Performing Arts students were hard at work during intermission selling Table Talk pies as a fundraiser.

A birds-eye view of Wellesley Marketplace, which also took place at WHS on Saturday.

The Wellesley Gardeners’s Guild had a fundraising table at Marketplace. The raffle ticket winners (not pictured) were: Grand Prize (home exterior decorating by NatureWorks), Jeannie Peters. Doorway pots by a Blade of Grass, Cynthia Strauss. and a centerpiece by Posies, Kathy Skelly.

Thanks Wellesley Facilities crew for doing double duty clean-up. Saturday was a busy day at WHS that included Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club Wellesley Marketplace and a production of Sweeney Todd, both on the same day and overlapping at the same time. In keeping with Wellesley CORE values, the two groups cooperated in the spirit of commitment to community.
Do a little Wellesley Marketplace Shopping, see a little Sweeney Todd. It’s all good.

Sell more pie, Sweeney Todd moms.

Onto Thanksgiving, brave Wellesley Marketplace shoppers and Sweeney Todd thespians.

A real fire broke out on stage at Wellesley High’s Sweeney Todd

November 11, 2017 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Wellesley High's Sweeney Todd

As if Wellesley High’s production of Sweeney Todd wasn’t dramatic enough already, a small fire broke out on stage Saturday night during the final performance of the play and forced those in attendance to head outside into the freezing temps while Wellesley firefighters handled the situation.

According to Wellesley Parents of Performing Students on social media, a rag fell off the stage set, hit a light and started a fire. “Cast, crew, and musicians all remained so calm and poised,” Wellesley POPS tweeted.

The show went on after firefighters handled the fire. The coincidence of the song “City on Fire” being performed right after the unexpected intermission wasn’t lost on those at the show.

The dark musical, which we had seen the night before, actually starts with a scene in which a group of Londoners huddle around a faux fire to warm themselves.

Some unintended drama at Sweeney Todd. Audience, cast and crew are safe but cold. Fire broke out on stage. Wellesley’s finest are on the job.

Wellesley HS musical audition info, Sweeney Todd

July 22, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

Wellesley, Sweeney Todd

Auditions are coming up for Wellesley High School’s upcoming musical, Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. On Monday, August 28, 3pm – 6pm there will be a audition workshop in the Little Theater, Room 165.

Auditions Days and Times

Wednesday, August 30 – 3pm to 6pm
Thursday, August 31 – 3pm to 6 pm
Friday, September 1 –  3pm to 6pm

Here are a few words of advice on what to expect at the auditions.

First, be prepared, know the show really well, listen to the original Broadway cast over the summer; the movie is different from the Broadway show.

Second, prepare 16-32 measures of song (about the length of of a verse and chorus), pick a song that shows off your voice.

Third, don’t wait until the last minute to prepare, work on your song early so you feel confident about your audition.
You must sign up for both a dance and musical audition.

Please email wellesleyhsmusical@gmail.com with questions over the summer.

Wellesley Marketplace and WHS to offer “Shop and Show” deal

November 10, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

Sweeney Todd Matinee Attendees Get In Free to Annual Craft Fair; Both Held at Wellesley High School on Veterans Day

SPONSORED POST: Love getting your holiday shopping done in one fun, easy spree? Do you also enjoy watching young performers shine while doing their thing in an award-winning Broadway musical? Then don’t miss this year’s Shop & Show Deal that combines a ticket to Wellesley High School’s Fall Musical, Sweeney Todd-Demon Barber of Fleet Street with free admission to the Wellesley Marketplace—both at WHS, 50 Rice St.,  on Saturday, November 11.

Love these colorful batik dresses from Three Islands Clothing that manage to be both preppy and island chic. This island style vibe was created by cousins Justin and Phil in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, after a surfing trip to Bali.

“We are pleased to offer attendees the opportunity to experience both of these annual favorites,” said Sabreena Kropp, vice president of fundraising for Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club (WHJWC), which organizes the annual Wellesley Marketplace. “Come enjoy a day of handcrafted, visual, culinary and performing arts.”

Sweeney Todd is a dark, witty Tony-award winning Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim that is rife with love, murder, revenge and some of the most chilling music written for stage. Guests who have pre-purchased tickets to the November 11 2pm Sweeney Todd show will be granted free general admission to Wellesley Marketplace beginning at 10am. Additionally, because Wellesley Marketplace is occurring on Veterans Day this year, veterans and active-duty military also will be granted free general admission.

“Half of the funds we raise every year go to scholarships for local high school students. We are grateful to partner with WHS educators, parents and students in our efforts to help the Wellesley community,” said Janice Kwan, president of WHJWC. In 2016-17, Wellesley Juniors gave away $70,000 in college scholarships and $70,000 in community grants to Wellesley-area community groups.

Wellesley POPS: “Eat more pie”

November 9, 2017 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

Wellesley pies

Wellesley Parents Of Performing Students (POPS) know you want to eat more pie, and they are ready to help you achieve that goal by selling savory and sweet pies at the Sweeney Todd concessions booth, dubbed Wellesley POPS Mrs. Lovett’s Pie Shop. The pies will be sold at each performance and are also available online.

The show-stopping WHS musical opens on Thursday, November 9. Pies will be available for sale at these times:

• Thursday, November 9th, 3:30pm to 7:30pm
• Friday, November 10th, 6pm to 10pm
• Saturday, November 11th, 11am to 10pm (longer hours due to participation in the Wellesley Marketplace)

Here are the Sweeney Todd showtimes:

Thursday, November 9, 4:30pm
Friday, November 10, 7pm
Saturday, November 11, 2pm & 7pm

The 2,000 pies that POPS has to sell (donated by Landry’s Meat Pies of Attleboro) aren’t going to eat themselves, people, so step right up. And if you’ve never seen the show and are frankly confused about all this Sweeney Todd/pies thing, I can promise you that once you see the show, it will all become clear. Trust me on this one.

Could the Wellesley dump get any classier?

October 25, 2017 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

Wellesley RDF

Thanks to reader and local artist Chelsea Sebastian for sending along this video of the latest addition to the Reusables Area at our own Wellesley Recycling and Disposal — a piano. If you want a chance to play a few bars on it, or you’ve got the perfect spot for it in your home, you’d better get down there fast. No telling how long it will last.

If you recognize Sebastian’s name, it may be because she has exhibited her work at the Wellesley Library, has opened her studio to visitors in the past on Wellesley Artists’ Studio day, and just last weekend did it again in her new studio, located in downtown Natick.

Check out Sebastian’s paintings here.

Here’s a familiar RDF site, as painted by Sebastian:
